Ledger Board750 viewsThe new ledger board was then placed, so it could be used as a reference for the new footings.

Angled handrail in place748 viewsHere's a view from the entryway of the installed upper railing. We were quite relieved to have this piece installed properly!

Swing Beam708 viewsOn Thursday, we continued on by working on the swing beam. In the garage, we assembled the "A-frame" for the end support, as well as drilled all the holes through the timber and attached the swing hangers. Here, at the playground site, Cathy checks out the frame right as we get ready to attach it to the beam.

Adding the lower deck703 viewsAt this point, the three major frames were all installed, and Tim works on adding the decking for the lower deck. The special green brackets are in use here -- on the right side just under the lower deck you can see two in use (the others are still waiting to be used).

Completed rails before finishing690 viewsAnother view of the completed railing. If you look carefully to the left of this picture, you will see the almond wrought-iron railing leading downstairs. This railing was also replaced, but not at the time this picture was taken.

Starting out687 viewsWe started on a rainy Tuesday, fortunately mostly working in the garage. The plans gave a detailed "cut list" and we cut out and labeled all the pieces, as well as rounded over the edges with a router for safety. In this picture, you can see one of the framing pieces after assembly, some of the smaller cut-outs, and the slide. The huge box is the "Turbo Slide", which you'll see coming up.

Upper rail complete687 viewsThe next step was to remove the other wrought-iron railing. This railing was one large piece, making up the straight upper section, and the angled section down the stairs (see the "before" pictures above). We also removed the trim board underneath the railing, so it could be replaced with a new oak board finished to match the new railing. We used the same procedure as above to install the small upper railing at the top of the stairs.

Angled Ballusters676 viewsHere Tim installs some of the balusters on the angled railing. Each baluster needed to be carefully miter-cut to the proper angle. As with the railings above, careful math and codes dictated the spacing between baluster spindles.

The "before" pic.645 viewsAt first we weren't sure where we'd put the 'garage' in our yard. Then Cathy spotted this particular spot -- nothing but overgrown vines and shrubs, next to an old bench that we moved there when we built the kid's play center. Doesn't look like much but it was a surprising amount of room...
