Rot problem799 viewsAfter removing a lot of siding and sheathing, we found the rot extended all the way to the foundation, directly under the left side of the patio door.

Ledger Board791 viewsThe new ledger board was then placed, so it could be used as a reference for the new footings.

Angled handrail in place790 viewsHere's a view from the entryway of the installed upper railing. We were quite relieved to have this piece installed properly!

Swing Beam759 viewsOn Thursday, we continued on by working on the swing beam. In the garage, we assembled the "A-frame" for the end support, as well as drilled all the holes through the timber and attached the swing hangers. Here, at the playground site, Cathy checks out the frame right as we get ready to attach it to the beam.

Starting out757 viewsWe started on a rainy Tuesday, fortunately mostly working in the garage. The plans gave a detailed "cut list" and we cut out and labeled all the pieces, as well as rounded over the edges with a router for safety. In this picture, you can see one of the framing pieces after assembly, some of the smaller cut-outs, and the slide. The huge box is the "Turbo Slide", which you'll see coming up.

Adding the lower deck756 viewsAt this point, the three major frames were all installed, and Tim works on adding the decking for the lower deck. The special green brackets are in use here -- on the right side just under the lower deck you can see two in use (the others are still waiting to be used).

Front View740 viewsHere is the front of our home as it looked when we bought it. We've made quite a few changes: replacing the front entry and storm doors (the old one was Barbie Pink -- no kidding! If you click on the image to view the large one and zoom in, you can kind of tell), trimming back the overgrown foliage, removing the awnings, and adding green decorative shutters on all four windows. We also replaced the driveway, and widened it to the width of the rock in the picture above.

The Pond and Geese738 viewsYet another view (can you tell we enjoy the pond?) Geese, ducks, and other critters have been frequent visitors. We've had baby geese and their parents come and go. All the wildlife has been fun and fascinating to watch.

The "before" pic.736 viewsAt first we weren't sure where we'd put the 'garage' in our yard. Then Cathy spotted this particular spot -- nothing but overgrown vines and shrubs, next to an old bench that we moved there when we built the kid's play center. Doesn't look like much but it was a surprising amount of room...

Upper rail complete731 viewsThe next step was to remove the other wrought-iron railing. This railing was one large piece, making up the straight upper section, and the angled section down the stairs (see the "before" pictures above). We also removed the trim board underneath the railing, so it could be replaced with a new oak board finished to match the new railing. We used the same procedure as above to install the small upper railing at the top of the stairs.
