The EngineHere's the engine itself. At Keystone, our "turn around" point, they stopped the train, disconnected the engine, and moved it to what was formerly the rear of the train. So on the way back to Hill City, the engine was facing the "right" direction. This was different than the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge which we took a few years earlier in Durango, Colorado, where they turned the entire train around on a wye.Jun 21, 2006
1880cross.jpg
The railroad travels through some very pretty Black Hills country, sometimes right through the hill. In the twenty or so miles, there are 19 road crossings--all on the same road! So we got to hear the steam whistle quite often. This picture shows one of the hillsides, near a Bible camp. The camp has erected a cross at the top of the hill (which you can see better if you view the enlarged version).

On the trainHere's a picture of the train on the way from Hill City to Keystone. On this stretch, the engine was actually "backwards" with the "rear" of the engine at the front of the train. The engines have been modified to burn oil rather than coal or wood.Jun 21, 2006
