The Engine637 viewsHere's the engine itself. At Keystone, our "turn around" point, they stopped the train, disconnected the engine, and moved it to what was formerly the rear of the train. So on the way back to Hill City, the engine was facing the "right" direction. This was different than the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge which we took a few years earlier in Durango, Colorado, where they turned the entire train around on a wye.

Needles Highway627 viewsAnother "self timer" shot. The two of us look goofier, but Bailey's "tilted head" pose makes it worth including.

Deer at the Tower580 viewsAs were were walking the trail around Devils Tower, we ran into a couple of deer just yards from where we were standing. The pictures below show them, amongst the many boulders surrounding the tower.

Minuteman Missile580 viewsPerhaps most interesting, however (perhaps due to growing up at the tail-end of the Cold War, with Ronnie Regan at the helm) was this Minuteman missile. These missiles were placed in silos all over North and South Dakota, and were a large part of our "Balance of Terror" defense. It's good to see so many of them decommissioned now. Supposedly they're also turning two old silos near the Badlands into a National Park.
