Needles Highway364 viewsOne of our favorite areas of Custer State Park is the Needles Highway. There are so many scenic views and overlooks. Here, Cathy poses on a rock outcropping with Bailey.

The Engine330 viewsHere's the engine itself. At Keystone, our "turn around" point, they stopped the train, disconnected the engine, and moved it to what was formerly the rear of the train. So on the way back to Hill City, the engine was facing the "right" direction. This was different than the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge which we took a few years earlier in Durango, Colorado, where they turned the entire train around on a wye.

On the train324 viewsHere's a picture of the train on the way from Hill City to Keystone. On this stretch, the engine was actually "backwards" with the "rear" of the engine at the front of the train. The engines have been modified to burn oil rather than coal or wood.
