Grandma and William on 1880 Train416 viewsWe all love trains, so once again we took the 1880 train. The brochure admitted that the name was pretty much chosen randomly, since the railroad's equipment is probably closer to the 30's and 40's... But who cares about details, right?

The Engine415 viewsHere's the engine itself. At Keystone, our "turn around" point, they stopped the train, disconnected the engine, and moved it to what was formerly the rear of the train. So on the way back to Hill City, the engine was facing the "right" direction. This was different than the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge which we took a few years earlier in Durango, Colorado, where they turned the entire train around on a wye.

First Model 720 produced415 viewsThis 720 tractor had the serial number "7200000". It was the very tractor used in the Nebraska horsepower tests - the tests that provide the "official" horsepower specs for the entire model line. Interestingly enough, the tractor has been in the same family its whole life - they bought it from Deere a couple years after it was produced, and used it up until the late 1990's, when they decided to restore it.
