| Engine 261 in Wayzata |
|
During Wayzata, MN's 2006 James J. Hill days, they brought in Engine 261 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wayzata Depot. We weren't able to get tickets to ride, but we did watch it leave the depot, and then "chased" it on it's journey to Howard Lake, MN and back. The railroad line parallels US Highway 12 so we were able to get many good views of it during the chase. It was perhaps even more fun to watch it this way than to ride it.

Preparing to leave WayzataEngine 261 gets ready to steam out of Wayzata during James J. Hill Days in 2006

Black SmokeI was actually surprised they let us stand as close as we did. We were perhaps 8' back from the tracks when I took these pictures. It was quite loud when they blew the whistle and then blew off steam!

Inching awayThe train started out very slowly and took some time to pick up speed, but eventually made it up to a cruising speed of somewhere around 45 or 50 mph, judging from our speed as we "chased" it.

Heading into Howard LakeWe chased the train all the way to Howard Lake, where it turned around. Since Highway 12 and the tracks run fairly parallel, we were able to get many good views of the train during its journey.
